New
Zealand is an island state in the south-western Pacific Ocean. It
is made up of two major islands and several smaller islands. A popular
Maori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa, which translates as The
Land of the Long White Cloud. New Zealand is a parliamentary democracy
and a part of the British Commonwealth.
The basic
unit of money in New Zealand is the New Zealand dollar which replaced
the pound in 1967 when they decimalised their currency.
If you wish to visit New
Zealand you will require a Visitor Visa from the New Zealand Immigration
Service. When you arrive a permit will be granted and allow you
to visit friends and relatives, look around the country, study or
receive occupational training for up to three months, receive medical
treatment, play sport with a touring team, take part in cultural
events (without payment), do business or attend a conference. A
Visitor Permit may be varied to allow work or study.
If you wish to study in New
Zealand, the New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS) issues Student
Visas which will allow you to travel to New Zealand. On arrival
you will be issued with a Student Permit which will allow you to
live in New Zealand and study.
If you travel on a passport
issued by a country which does not have a visa free agreement with
New Zealand, you require a Transit Visa to pass through New Zealand
to another destination. A Transit Visa is not required if you have
a current visa for entry.
If you wish to go to New
Zealand and work, you will need a Work Visa from the New Zealand
Immigration Service. You may also be able to apply for your Work
Visa to have single or multiple entries so you can leave and return
